Dr. Evzen Burian, whom we lovingly refer to as “Dr. B.”, has proudly owned and operated Providence Square Veterinary Clinic & Referral Services since 1990. He has gained over 40 years of valuable veterinary experience over a very diverse and interesting career.
Dr Burian graduated with the degree of Medicinae Veterinariae Doctoris from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Brno, Czechoslovakia in 1973. During his final three years of his six-year program, Dr. Burian completed a pre-doctoral residency in surgery and in 1976 he received board attestation in medicine and surgery as recognition of expertise in these fields. To further improve and broaden his surgical techniques, he completed a three year fellowship at the Kolin Medical Center in human orthopedics.
Dr. Burian has also received extensive training in the field of veterinary dentistry and from 1975 to 1982 he served as a member of the Czechoslovak Academy in the capacity of lecturer for post-doctoral continuing education classes in both veterinary surgery and dentistry.
He has an avid interest and concern for exotic species and wildlife which inspired him to complete a post-doctoral Master of Science in Wildlife and Game Management. Combining his skills as surgeon and wildlife biologist, Dr. Burian became a recognized authority in surgical techniques for birds of prey. His publications in this field led to an invitation from Cornell University to lecture on his techniques and exchange experience. Because at this time his native country was under communist rule, Dr. Burian defected to the United States in 1982. After obtaining his U.S. license to practice veterinary medicine, Dr. Burian worked as a surgeon for a five doctor veterinary hospital in Austin, Texas until 1989.
In 1990, he opened Providence Square Veterinary Clinic, his own full service clinic in Virginia Beach, Virginia. In addition to general practice, Dr. Burian provides advanced surgical and dental care to our clients and through veterinary referrals from his colleagues in Eastern Virginia and North Carolina.
“Dr. B” resides in Virginia Beach with his wife, Paula and his Chihuahua, Gio, our clinic mascot.
Dr. Scarborough earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1996, at North Carolina State University. She has a special interest in exotic species and began her professional career studying the behavioral ecology of desert amphibians and reptiles at the University of California at Riverside.
Later she owned and operated Azalea Coast Animal Care, a small animal, exotic and avian veterinary clinic in North Carolina for eight years. She relocated to Virginia Beach in 2009 and we were fortunate to have her join Providence Square Veterinary Clinic and Referral Services. She brings extensive experience in avian and exotic medicine, as well as small animal medicine and surgery. Her mild-mannered approach to veterinary medicine brings comfort to her patients as well as their owners.
Dr. Scarborough lives in Virginia Beach with her husband, David. They share their home with a cat named Katie, Sammy a yellow-collared macaw, a guinea pig named Elmo and her rescued Bichon, Pritsy, who enjoys coming to work with her each morning.
